Library

Our 2nd graders were presented with a fun challenge in their library class. After reading the book, "Ricky, the Rock That Couldn't Roll," the students were inspired by Ricky's problem: he was a rock that was flat on one side and couldn't roll. The students were challenged to use their creativity and engineering skills to design a solution for a flat rock to roll. It was a hands-on project where they got to build and test their ideas. The kids had a blast inventing different ways to help their rocks roll. This activity wasn't just about having fun, it also taught them how to be problem-solvers and creative thinkers, just like a real engineer!
Mission Statement
Our goal at the Santan library is to provide students, parents, and staff the fullest access to all library materials. The following circulation policies are designed to provide accessibility of the collection to all, while still meeting the needs of individual patrons.
General Guidelines
Non- Circulating material such as encyclopedias and other reference books as well as periodicals may be checked out by faculty only.
In accordance with the ALA Librarians' Code of Ethics, the Santan Media Center will "protect each user's right to privacy with respect to information sought or received and materials consulted, borrowed, or acquired," meaning circulation information will not be shared.
General Collection
The lending period for materials checked out to students is eight days.
Parents and staff are asked to return materials in a timely manner.
There are no fines levied for overdue books but students receive a late notice through their homeroom teacher and are expected to return or renew the material as soon as possible.
Students may not check out any book (including Lit. books required by a teacher) if they have an outstanding overdue book.
Items may be renewed if there are no pending holds.
Kindergarten and First grade students may check out one book at a time.
Second through Sixth grade students may check out two books at a time.
Students may check out 3 books, if one is a required lit. book for Language Arts, or research material is needed to meet academic requirements. See librarian for permission to check out extra books.
Although we encourage students to own their own flash drive, there are several available for checkout in the Media Center.
Reference Books
Books with classification numbers designated REF (reference) do not circulate.
Audio Books
Santan Media Center owns a variety of audio books as cassette tapes, CD’s and Playaways. We encourage students to check out the book as well as the audio book to reinforce reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
Playaways are available for checkout to students who have returned a Playaway permission slip. Playaway audio books are valued at a minimum of $50 and are the responsibility of the patron upon check out. Students must provide their own headphones.
Lost/Stolen or Damaged Books
Patrons are responsible for the books they check out.
A book will be declared lost after it is missing for 30 days.
The cost of a damaged item will be assessed at the time the item is returned.
Books may be paid online in your child's InTouch account.
If a book has been lost, paid for, and then found and returned in good condition before a replacement copy has been purchased, a refund will be issued for the full amount.
Students with outstanding fees for lost or damaged books will not be able to check out new materials until the fees are paid.
